Gay Seidman


Gay Seidman, University of Wisconsin - Madison

Gay Seidman is Professor of Sociology at UW-Madison, and currently serves as Director of African Studies, Director of Development Studies, and as a WAGE Senior Fellow. Her research has focused on labor and social movements in southern Africa and Latin America, including Manufacturing Militance: Workers' Movements in Brazil and South Africa (University of California Press, 1994), and Beyond the Boycott: Labor Rights, Human Rights and Transnational Activism (Russell Sage Foundation Press, 2007). Her recent article, "Laboring under an Illusion?" examines an effort by the ILO and Lesotho to create a 'sweat-free' national labor (Third World Quarterly, 2009).
