Overview: This lecture will address the changes China has undergone in the last thirty years, looking closely at the role of military industries in Guangdong province as the country has made the transition to a civilian, market-oriented economy in comparison with another post-Communist nation, Russia, and one that has yet to commit to a post-communist political economy, North Korea.
Speaker Biography: Professor Bachman is an accomplished scholar of contemporary China, specializing in both historical and current political issues relating to the government, domestic politics, and foreign relations of that country in both specific and comparative aspects. Since obtaining his Ph.D. in 1983 with a dissertation on the Great Leap Forward, he has authored or co-authored seven books in English and Chinese on topics ranging from the politics of Chinas financial system to democracy and technological change. He has also written articles in major Asia-oriented Political Science journals such as The China Quarterly, Pacific Affairs, and Asian Survey, among others, on numerous topics related to the changes China has undergone in recent times.
