Europe in Focus: Opportunities in an Enlarged Europe?
The historic accession of 10 new member states into the European Union in May 2004 created a single market of almost 500 million people and holds promise for greater stability in the region, increased trade through new markets, consolidation of regulations and barriers and a strengthening of the EU’s influence in the world. However, there are concerns about reforms in the new member states and the ability of their legal and administrative bodies to adequately enforce and interpret EU laws.
Presenters at this event provided an overview of the opportunities and challenges that European enlargement creates for U.S. business. The panelists shared examples, best practices and real-life strategies from their experience growing sales, developing distribution channels and creating strategic alliances in Eastern European markets.
Gregory Shaffer, director of the UW-Madison European Union Center and professor of law, moderated the discussion. Speakers included Terence W. Dittrich, international sales manager, Spancrete Machinery Corporation, oversees sales and marketing efforts worldwide for the company; and Kenneth Wasylik, founder and partner of E.M. Wasylik Associates LLP, a financial and business consulting firm specializing in assisting emerging companies develop markets worldwide.
